Dr. Gaw earned his medical degree in 1964 from the College of Medicine at the University of the East Ramon Magsaysay in Quezon City, Philippines. He completed his internship at Rochester General Hospital in 1965 and his psychiatric residency at Strong Memorial Hospital, University of Rochester, in 1968. He was a board-certified psychiatrist and served as a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF).
A Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association (APA), Dr. Gaw was the first Asian American to serve as Speaker of the APA Assembly (2002–2003). Throughout his career, he was a strong advocate for the inclusion of International Medical Graduates and greater ethnic diversity within the APA. His contributions were recognized with the Kun-Po Soo Award in 2006 and the George Tarjan Award in 2008.
