Dr. Ford, a native of Goldthwaite, Texas, graduated from Sonora High School in 1924, the University of Texas in 1927, and UTMB in 1931. He was the first resident to complete the three-year psychiatry program. His postgraduate training included Charity Hospital in New Orleans, John Sealy Hospital, the Galveston State Psychopathic Hospital, and the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. In 1935, he joined the UTMB faculty and was promoted to professor in 1946. He served as chairman of the Department of Neurology and Psychiatry from 1963 to 1973 and later as chairman of the Department of Psychiatry from 1973 to 1974.
Dr. Ford held leadership roles in several professional organizations, serving as president of the Texas Society for Mental Health (1950), the Galveston County Medical Society (1951), the Central Neuropsychiatric Association (1959), the Texas District Branch of the American Psychiatric Association (1959), the Texas Association for Mental Health (1963), the Southern Psychiatric Association (1969), and the American College of Psychiatrists (1974). He also served as Speaker of the Assembly for the American Psychiatric Association from 1966 to 1967 and was elected Vice President in 1969.
