Dr. Cohen was born in Birmingham, Alabama, and spent nearly 50 years practicing psychiatry in Houston, Texas. He attended the University of Texas at Austin from 1939 to 1943 and earned his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston in 1945. He later served as a captain in the Army Medical Corps.
A Distinguished Life Fellow of the APA and an Emeritus Fellow of the American College of Psychiatry, Dr. Cohen was elected Speaker of the APA Assembly (1987–1988), and also served on the APA Board of Trustees and the Council on Research. In 1995, he received the Special Presidential Commendation for his wide-ranging contributions to the field of psychiatry.
