Dr. Lazarus earned his medical degree with honors in psychiatry from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in 1968. He is a clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of Colorado-Denver School of Medicine and also serves as a voluntary professor of psychiatry at the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine.
A board-certified psychiatrist in private practice in Denver, Dr. Lazarus served as President of the American Medical Association (AMA) from 2012 to 2013 and currently chairs the AMA’s Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs. He is a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and was Speaker of the APA Assembly from 1997 to 1998. Dr. Lazarus has also held leadership roles as president of the Colorado Medical Society, Colorado Psychiatric Society, and Arapahoe County Medical Society.
