Dr. Adams, a native of Eureka, California, graduated from Northwestern University and earned his medical degree from McGill University in Montreal in 1943. During World War II, he served as a battalion surgeon with the United States 5th Army in Italy. After his military service, Dr. Adams became a fellow at the Menninger School of Psychiatry in Topeka, Kansas. From 1949 to 1954, he was a faculty member at the Menninger School and a staff psychiatrist with the Menninger Foundation.
In 1954, he returned to Chicago, where he became chief of psychiatry at Passavant Memorial Hospital, maintained a private practice, and began teaching at Northwestern University's medical school. From 1959 to 1980, he served as an examining psychiatrist with the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Dr. Adams was a Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, holding several leadership positions, including serving as Speaker of the Assembly from 1967 to 1968.
