Dr. McIntyre, originally from New York City, earned his A.B. from Notre Dame in 1963 and his M.D. from the University of Rochester in 1967. He completed his psychiatry residency at Strong Memorial Hospital and the University of Rochester, pausing to serve as a Major at the U.S. Army Hospital in Fort Campbell. After finishing his training, he stayed in Rochester, working in private practice and teaching at the medical school.
He has been active in the American Psychiatric Association (APA) for many years. He helped start the APA Practice Research Network and served as Chair of its Steering Committee. He was President of his District Branch in 1980, served in the APA Assembly from 1984 to 1986, and became Speaker of the Assembly in 1988. He also held leadership roles in the New York Psychiatric Society, including Vice-President. Dr. McIntyre served as APA President from 1993 to 1994.
