Dr. Lipsett was born in New York City, graduated from UC Berkeley and obtained his medical degree from Creighton University in 1944. After interning in NY, he served as a ship's physician aboard the USS Cascade, later completing his residency at the University of Michigan. Dr. Lipsett opened his psychiatric practice in Berkeley in the early 1950s. He served as president of the East Bay Psychiatric Association, and was a founding member of the Northern California Psychiatric Society.
Dr. Lipsett was a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, and also served as Speaker of the Assembly (1980-1981). He had a special interest in workers' health issues and was a qualified medical evaluator for workers' compensation cases. Dr. Lipsett was passionate about his work and continued to practice psychiatry into his late eighties.
