Dr. Stotland has long been a prominent voice in public education on psychiatric issues. She earned her medical degree from the University of Chicago Division of the Biological Sciences, The Pritzker School of Medicine in 1967, and completed her residency at the University of Chicago Medical Center in 1970. From 1987 to 1993, she served as Associate Professor and Director of the consultation-liaison service and residency training at the University of Chicago. She went on to become Chief Medical Officer for the Illinois Department of Mental Health from 1993 to 1996.
A Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, Dr. Stotland has received numerous honors, including the APA’s Francis Braceland and Alexandra Symonds Awards and the Lila Wallis Award from the American Medical Women’s Association. Her leadership within the APA is notable; she served as Speaker of the Assembly from 2001 to 2002 and as President of the APA from 2008 to 2009.
