Dr. Clemens earned his medical degree from Harvard Medical School in 1959 and completed an internship in medicine followed by a psychiatry residency at University Hospitals in Cleveland, Ohio, from (1959-1964). A psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, he has had a long and distinguished career in clinical practice, psychiatric and psychoanalytic education, and professional leadership. Although he closed his private practice and retired from active clinical work in July 2011, he continues to contribute through teaching, consultation, supervision, and professional writing.
A Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association (APA), Dr. Clemens has served on numerous APA committees. He represented the Ohio Psychiatric Physicians Association in the APA Assembly from (1988-1992), served as Recorder from (1992-1993), and was elected Speaker of the Assembly for the (1994–1995) term. In recognition of his dedication to education, he received the APA’s Nancy A. Roeske Teaching Award in 1995.
