Dr. Campbell earned his medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons in 1948 and completed his residency at New York Presbyterian Hospital (Columbia Campus)/New York State Psychiatric Institute Program from 1949 to 1951. A member of the APA since 1953, he was recognized as a Fellow in 1961 and a Distinguished Life Fellow in 1988. He served in numerous leadership roles within the organization, including Editor-in-Chief of Psychiatric News (1983–1998), member of the APA Board of Trustees (1983–1990), Vice President (1980–1982), Speaker of the Assembly (1978–1979), and Chair of the Joint Commission on Government Relations (1975–1980).
A respected leader in New York’s psychiatric community, Dr. Campbell was Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Cornell University Medical College and served as Medical Director of Gracie Square Hospital in New York City from 1977 to 2006, later becoming Director Emeritus until 2013. Among his most significant contributions was his advocacy for the removal of homosexuality as a diagnosis from the DSM—an effort that underscored his lifelong commitment to social justice, public service, and the advancement of psychiatry.
