Dr. Obenauf was born in Muskegon, Michigan, graduated from medical school in 1947 devoting his life to the field of Psychiatry. He served on the staff of Ypsilanti State Hospital, Michigan where he was an assistant Medical Superintendent. In 1953, he became out-patient clinical director at Ypsilanti until 1959, then taking over the position of Superintendent of the Pontiac State Hospital.
Dr. Obenauf was a member of the Michigan State Medical Society, Mental Health Committee and served as president of the Michigan Society of Neurology and Psychiatry. Dr. Obenauf held many offices in the American Psychiatric Association serving as Speaker of the Assembly from 1958-1959 and being elected Treasurer in 1963.
