Dr. Sorum was born in Virginia and completed his residency at Tulane University. He maintained a private practice in Louisiana and also worked in mental health hospitals, taking an active role in the state’s alcohol and drug treatment programs. Deeply involved with the American Psychiatric Association (APA), he served as Chairman of the Nominating Committee and as President of the Louisiana Psychiatric Medical Society from 1987 to 1988. In honor of his contributions, the APA established the William Sorum Assembly Resident-Fellow Member (RFM) Award in 1991. Dr. Sorum also served as Speaker of the APA Assembly from 1982 to 1983.
