The American Psychiatric Association Foundation today welcomed 133 new fellows into its 2025-2026 Fellowships class for a total of 212 members, the largest in program history. The APA Foundation’s Fellowships program supports early-career psychiatrists to broaden the scope of their work through hands-on experiential learning, mentorship and networking opportunities, and attendance at the APA’s Annual Meeting. This year, the program received 423 applications from 289 individuals – an increase of 72 applications from the 2024-2025 cycle.
The incoming class represents 88 institutions from 32 U.S. states, Puerto Rico, Canada, and Washington, D.C. 82 of this year’s applicants were International Medical Graduates that represented 29 countries outside of the U.S. and Canada. The APA Foundation offers an array of nine fellowships that place emerging psychiatrists in settings from Capitol Hill to healthcare deserts in the rural U.S. “The consistent year-over-year growth of our Fellowships program shows clearly that the increased demand for mental health services is being countered by a desire to increase the supply and to provide highest-quality care while doing so,” said Rawle Andrews Jr., Esq., executive director of the APA Foundation. “We are honored to stand on the front lines of the response to the mental health crisis and to welcome so many rising leaders in psychiatry into our fellowships during another competitive year for the program.”
Many of today’s APA leaders are graduates of the Foundation’s Fellowships program, including: Marketa Wills, M.D., M.B.A., APA CEO and Medical Director; Saul Levin, M.D., M.P.A., former APA CEO and Medical Director; Petros Levounis, M.D., M.A., APA Past President; and Rebecca Brendel, M.D., J.D., APA Past President. Other alumni of the Fellowships program have achieved leadership roles within the World Psychiatric Association, the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, the American Association of Directors of Psychiatric Residency Training, and more. APA Foundation Fellows have the opportunity to run for leadership roles such as Chair and Vice Chair of each Fellowship, and they are placed on APA’s Councils, Committees, and Caucuses.
