Lecture: Early Inventions in Different Phases of Schizophrenia (presented at IPS)
Dr. Herz is Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Rochester. Previous positions include Director of the Community Service, New York State Psychiatric Institute; Professor and Chair, Department of Psychiatry, SUNY, Buffalo; and Director of the Community Support Program and Director of Mental Health Services Research, University of Rochester. His research career has been dedicated to studying questions regarding optimal treatment and service delivery for severely mentally ill individuals, especially those with schizophrenia that grew out of his clinical experience working with this population. He has emphasized the importance of conducting controlled clinical trials to provide evidence-based treatment recommendations and focused on combining psychosocial and psychopharmacological approaches in the treatment of individuals with schizophrenia. His research elucidating the prodromal systems of relapse in schizophrenia has had a major impact on relapse prevention. Dr. Herz served as Senior Science Advisor to the Director of NIMH around chronic mental illness and was Chair of the American Psychiatric Association Work Group to develop a Practice Guideline for the treatment of schizophrenia.
