Dr. Nelson, Medical Director and co-founder of LaCheim Behavioral Health Services, has been practicing psychiatry for over 30 years. He earned his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and completed his residency at Zucker Hillside Hospital, part of Northwell Health. Dr. Nelson specializes in treating patients with complex or treatment-resistant emotional and mental health disorders. Since 2000, he has been a member of the medical staff at Marin General Hospital, where he has held several key roles, including Chair of the Psychiatry Department, Service Chief of Consultation and Emergency Psychiatry, and Medical Director of Outpatient Behavioral Health Services.
Beyond his clinical work, Dr. Nelson is a passionate advocate for mental health. He has dedicated his career to improving access to high-quality care and advocating for the rights of individuals with mental illness. Over the past decade, he has been actively involved in the APA Assembly, serving as Recorder, Acting Speaker-Elect, Speaker-Elect, and Speaker of the Assembly. A Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Dr. Nelson is also a Distinguished Lifetime Fellow of the APA.
