Dr. Hanin was born in China and moved to the U.S. at 18 months old. He lived in New York City, Miami Beach, and San Francisco before returning to New York for high school. He later attended City College and earned his medical degree from NYU. After completing his internship and residency in psychiatry at St.Vincent’s Medical Center in New York City (1958-1962), he spent the next two years serving in the US Army.
Dr. Hanin has had a distinguished career in American psychiatry and held numerous leadership roles within the APA. He served as President of the Westchester District Branch (1978–1979), Assembly Representative (1981–1984), Recorder (1988–1989), and Speaker of the Assembly (1990–1991). He also chaired the Council on National Affairs, the Psychiatric News Editorial Advisory Board, and the Joint Commission on National Affairs.
