Dr. Gottlieb, a board-certified psychiatrist, earned his medical degree from the University of California (San Francisco) School of Medicine in 1958. He completed his internship at the University of Southern California/LACUSC Medical Center from 1958 to 1959, followed by a residency at Massachusetts Mental Health Center from 1959 to 1961 and Saint Elizabeths Hospital from 1961 to 1963. He then pursued a fellowship at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine/UCLA Medical Center from 1963 to 1965, further refining his expertise in psychiatry.
Dr. Gottlieb played a significant role in advancing family and systems psychiatry. He co-founded the Caucus of Family/Systems Psychiatrists and contributed to the field by serving on the Family Committee of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Additionally, he chaired the Group for the Advancement of Psychiatry’s Committee on the Family. A Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association (APA), Dr. Gottlieb was actively involved in its leadership, serving as Speaker of the Assembly from 1984 to 1985, Area VI Trustee from 1986 to 1989, Vice President from 1989 to 1991, and Treasurer from 1994 to 1998.
