Dr. Trench was born in Clarksburg, West Virginia, earned his medical degree from the University of Maryland, served his internship and residency at St. Francis Hospital in Pittsburg. He was a Diplomate of American Board Psychiatry and Neurology and was a Captain in the U.S. Air Force from 1951-1953. He had a psychiatric practice in Hartford, Connecticut for 25 years and served on the staffs of Hartford Hospital and the Institute of Living.
Dr. Trench was department chairman at Lawrence and Memorial from 1979 to 1989, and he initiated a number of psychiatric programs at the hospital. He was instrumental in designing and renovating Pond House, the area's first inpatient facility, and overhauled an outpatient program for state patients to turn it into a comprehensive, community-oriented counseling center. Dr. Trench was a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, served as the Recorder of the Assembly from 1983-1984, was chairman of the commission on sub-specialization and served as the Speaker of the Assembly from 1985-1986.
