Dr. Akaka is a board-certified psychiatrist and Clinical Professor of psychiatry at the Burns Medical School in Hawaii. He received his Doctor of Medicine from University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine Honolulu, Hawaii in 1982 and completed his residency at Richmond University Medical Center Program in 1986.
Dr. Akaka is a Distinguished Life Fellow of the APA and joined the APA Assembly in 1992 as deputy representative of the Caucus of American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian Psychiatrists. He has served on numerous APA components and was the recipient of the APA’s Distinguished Service Award in 2018. He served as Recorder of the Assembly from 2005-06 and Speaker of the Assembly from 2007-08.
