Dr. Visher was born in Waukesha, Wisconsin, and earned his bachelor’s degree from Indiana University in Bloomington. After obtaining his medical degree from Indiana University in Indianapolis in 1944, he completed his psychiatric training at the University of Minnesota. Following World War II, he served as a medical officer for the Army in Japan. From 1948 to 1951, he continued his psychiatric training at the University of Minnesota’s School of Medicine in Minneapolis.
In 1979, Dr. Visher and his wife co-founded the Stepfamily Association of America (SAA), pioneering efforts to support and advocate for stepfamilies at a time when the concept was still emerging. He was a Life Member of the American Psychiatric Association, an active member of the Northern California Psychiatric Society, and served as Speaker of the Assembly from 1970 to 1971.
