Dr. Abramson was born in New York City and earned his medical degree from the University of Michigan in 1923. He completed his residency at Kings Park State Hospital and became board-certified in both psychiatry and neurology. In 1949, he helped establish the Brooklyn Psychiatric Society and later served as its president.
His contributions extended well beyond organized psychiatry. As early as 1943, Dr. Abramson recognized that World War II veterans would face significant mental health challenges upon returning to civilian life. To help prevent long-term institutionalization, he persuaded Brooklyn Jewish Hospital to provide space for a new clinic. He then assembled a volunteer team of psychiatrists, psychologists, and nurses to launch the first rehabilitation clinic for veterans. The program’s success ultimately led the Veterans Administration to adopt it and provide salaried staff. Dr. Abramson served as the first president of the Assembly of District Branches from 1953-1954.
