Dr. Zaphiropoulos was born in Alexandria, Egypt, and received his medical degree from Université de Paris, Faculté de Médecine, in 1939. He completed his residency at the National Hospital Charenton that same year. In 1951, he graduated from the psychoanalytic training program at the William Alanson White Institute. He later joined Contemporary Psychoanalysis as an associate editor in 1969 and served on its Editorial Board from 1995 until his passing.
An International Medical Graduate (IMG) and Life Member of the American Psychiatric Association (APA), Dr. Zaphiropoulos contributed significantly to the field. He also held a leadership role within the APA, serving as Speaker of the Assembly from 1975 to 1976.
