Dr. Walker received his medical degree from the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine in 1972. He began his postgraduate training in psychiatry at the University of Oklahoma and went on to complete his residency at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine in 1977.
A board-certified psychiatrist, Dr. Walker has dedicated his work to improving the prevention and treatment of addiction and mental health disorders in American Indian communities. He is Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry at Oregon Health & Science University and Director of the One Sky Center, a national resource center focused on American Indian health, education, and research. A Distinguished Life Fellow of the APA, he has served on the Committee of American Indian, Alaska Native & Native Hawaiian Psychiatrists and was Speaker of the APA Assembly from 1996 to 1997.
