Dr. Peele earned his medical degree from the University of Tennessee in 1960 and completed his residency at St. Elizabeths Hospital (1961–1964). He went on to serve as chief of service of the William A. White Research Unit and later as superintendent. Alongside his roles in public service, he was a clinical professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the George Washington University School of Medicine. Throughout his career, Dr. Peele has been a dedicated leader in public and administrative psychiatry, focusing his work on improving mental health systems and services.
A Distinguished Life Fellow of the APA, Dr. Peele joined the organization in 1975 and has remained an active member for over 50 years. He served as Speaker of the Assembly from 1986 to 1987 and was deeply involved with the Assembly for more than three decades. In recognition of his longstanding service and contributions, he received the APA Administrative Psychiatry Award in 1989 and the APA Speaker’s Award in 2017.
