Dr. Williams was born in Hayesville, North Carolina, and earned his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston in 1956. In 1970, he established a private practice and became an associate in psychiatry at the University of Arizona. He also served as president of both the Tucson Psychiatric Society and the Arizona Psychiatric Society from 1961 to 1963.
Dr. Williams held various leadership roles within the APA, including serving on the Committee on Constitution and Bylaws and chairing the Task Force on the Delivery of Mental Health Services. He was also a delegate and alternate delegate to the Assembly before being elected Speaker of the Assembly from 1973 to 1974. In 1984, the Warren Williams Assembly Speaker’s Award was established in his honor and is administered by the APA Area Councils to recognize outstanding contributions in psychiatry and mental health.
