Psychiatric News 60th Anniversary

In celebration of the 60th Anniversary of Psychiatric News, this gallery highlights the history of the newsletter and mail pouch, memorable topics, and the editors in chief who shaped its voice. It all began in 1948 with the publication of the Newsletter and Mail Pouch, which helped foster communication within the Association.

By the early 1960s, APA’s rapid expansion made it challenging to sustain the traditional system. In response, the Association developed a more modern communication tool which led to the creation of Psychiatric News. The pilot issue debuted in September 1965, and regular publication began in January 1966.

Not only a source of clinical news but also a space for thought leadership, Psychiatric News has become essential to the functioning of the APA and is offered at no cost as a benefit of membership.

Explore the history of Psychiatric News in this exhibit, also available to view in person at the Melvin Sabshin, M.D., Library and Archives at APA HQ.

I would like to extend a special thank you to  Adrian Preda, M.D., APA Staff: Chris Durso, Mark Moran, Steve Parrish, Christopher Tang, Abby Palazzo and Former APA Staff: Cathy Brown and Herbert Gant for their assistance on this project.
