In June 1948, under the presidency of Dr. William Menninger, Dr. Blain launched the APA’s first official newsletter, known as the Mail Pouch. Published monthly—excluding July and August—it was created to improve internal communication among members. The early issues were largely shaped by member contributions, sharing updates, announcements, and news from across the field.
Although the newsletter had been approved by the Council (now the Board of Trustees), it did not receive any formal funding. Demonstrating his dedication to the profession and the organization, Dr. Blain personally financed its launch, donating $500 to cover the initial postage and distribution costs. His commitment helped lay the foundation for what would become a vital channel of communication within the APA.
