The Autograph Library began in October 1948 when the APA’s Medical Director, Daniel Blain invited members to donate autographed copies of their books. Publishers were also encouraged to contribute books on psychiatry. The collection was intended to have lasting historical value and became the foundation of the APA Library, which grew into today’s Melvin Sabshin, M.D. Library & Archives.
