In 1960, the Association of Gay and Lesbian Psychiatrists informally originated when gay and lesbian members of the APA met during the annual meeting. Following the APA's declassification of homosexuality as a mental disorder in 1973, the Caucus of Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Members of the American Psychiatric Association was officially founded.
A primary function of the caucus was to advocate to the APA for LGBT mental health issues. The Association of Gay and Lesbian Psychiatrists grew out of the caucus and was founded in 1985. The group changed its name in 2015 but continues to be known as the AGLP.
