Washington, D.C. (July 27, 2026) – The American Psychiatric Association Foundation is pleased to announce the election of five new members to its Board of Directors: Vasilis "Bill" Pozios, M.D.; Robert Trestman, M.D., Ph.D.; Sarah Vinson, M.D.; Donald Remy, J.D.; and Mädchen Amick. Driven by the APA Foundation’s mission to create a mentally healthy nation for all, the Board of Directors is comprised of clinicians, advocates, and businesspeople, all of whom bring mental health expertise and strategic acumen to their roles.
"We are honored and fortunate to welcome such an exceptional group of servant leaders to the APA Foundation’s Board of Directors," said Rawle Andrews, Jr., Esq., executive director of the Foundation. "The depth and breadth of experience, knowhow, and perspective our new board members bring will strengthen our Foundation’s ability to meet this moment by expanding awareness, literacy, and access to mental health resources; advancing innovation across the next generation of physician-psychiatrists; and forging strategic partnerships that create lasting impact where we live, learn, work, worship, and play."
The five newly appointed members of the Board will be joined by incoming Ex Officio members: 2026-27 APA President-Elect, Rahn Bailey, M.D.; the immediate Past President of the APA, Theresa Miskimen Rivera, M.D.; and new APA Treasurer, Gia Merlo, M.D., M.Ed., M.B.A.
Vasilis Pozios, M.D.
Dr. Vasilis "Bill" Pozios is a board-certified general and forensic psychiatrist serving as the Chief Medical Officer at Oakland Community Health Network in Troy, MI. He has held several elected positions within the APA Assembly, including Speaker and Recorder, and is also a former President of the Michigan Psychiatric Society. Dr. Pozios is a steadfast advocate for combatting the fear and shame that is sometimes associated with mental health and substance use disorders. His insights into the connections between mental health, violence, and popular culture have been published in outlets such as The New York Times, The Hollywood Reporter, and The Daily Beast.
He has worked closely with APA Foundation’s Library and Archives to preserve the legacy of American psychiatry by recording oral histories of APA members. He received his B.A. in Economics from Tufts University and his M.D. from the Tufts School of Medicine.
Robert L. Trestman, M.D., Ph.D.
As Professor and Chair of the Carilion Clinic and Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine, Dr. Robert Trestman is a nationally renowned expert in psychiatry and population health. He has represented the APA before the Senate and the House of Representatives and is frequently cited in regional and national media outlets. Dr. Trestman is the author of over 180 peer-reviewed publications and serves on the boards of the American Hospital Association and the American Association of Chairs of Departments of Psychiatry. He is the immediate past Chair of APA’s Council on Healthcare Systems and Financing. Before his roles at Virginia Tech, he was a professor at the University of Connecticut Health Center for eighteen years.
Dr. Trestmen received his M.D. and his Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Tennessee. He is based in Roanoke, VA.
Sarah Y. Vinson, M.D.
Based in Atlanta, GA, Dr. Sarah Vinson is a triple-board-certified psychiatrist who specializes in adult psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, and forensic psychiatry. She is the founder of the Lorio Psych Group and Lorio Forensics in addition to her roles as Professor and Chair of Psychiatry and Pediatrics at the Morehouse School of Medicine and adjunct faculty at the Emory University School of Medicine. She is the Past President of the Georgia Council on Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and the Treasurer of the Georgia Psychiatric Physicians Association. She was also selected for the APA Foundation’s Jeanne Spurlock Minority Fellowship and later received the Jeanne Spurlock Minority Fellowship Alumna Achievement Award.
In addition to her private practice and her roles in academic medicine, Dr. Vinson is a longtime advisor to the APA Foundation’s Judges and Psychiatrists Leadership Initiative. She received her B.S. in Chemistry from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University and her M.D. from the University of Florida.
Donald Remy, J.D.
The Honorable Donald M. Remy is the former U.S. Deputy Secretary of Veterans’ Affairs, a role in which he worked to increase health care access for veterans and meet the unique needs of military families. His current roles include founder and CEO of the Remy Group and board member of the Congressional Award Foundation and Mayo Clinic Rochester. He served four years in the military on active duty in the Army General Counsel’s Office, and in his civilian life has held roles in the Clinton administration, Fannie Mae, and Latham & Watkins. For ten years, he was the Chief Operating Officer and Chief Legal Officer of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Mr. Remy has been honored with the U.S. President’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
He is also the author of Collegiate Capitalism: The Battle for the Future of College Sports. Mr. Remy received his B.A. in Political Science from Louisiana State University and his J.D. from Howard University School of Law. He resides in the Miami metro area.
Mädchen Amick
Actress and television director Mädchen Amick is also the co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Don’t MiND Me, a nonprofit she created with her family to fight mental health stigma and create more equity in the healthcare system. She sits on the Board of the Screen Actors Guild—American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) and brings lived experience of mental health treatment to her new role on the APA Foundation Board. She is particularly well-known for her roles in David Lynch’s "Twin Peaks" and the television series Riverdale.
She lives with her husband and two children, all of whom are her Don’t MiND Me co-founders.
